SNOW
Product revenue and obligations accelerated as AI use expanded, while stock compensation kept GAAP profitability far behind adjusted results.
By June 30, Snowflake had strengthened the case that AI workloads could accelerate consumption of its data platform rather than displace it. Growth, customer expansion and contracted demand all improved, although the economic cost of equity compensation remained substantial.
Fiscal first-quarter product revenue increased 34% to $1.33 billion, total revenue rose 33% to $1.39 billion and remaining performance obligations grew 38% to $9.21 billion. Net revenue retention was 126%, and customers generating more than $1 million of trailing product revenue increased 29% to 779. These measures indicate both deeper use and broader large-customer adoption.
Non-GAAP operating margin reached 11.9%, while the company recorded a $326 million GAAP operating loss, equal to 23.4% of revenue. The difference was dominated by excluded compensation and related items. Partnerships with OpenAI and SAP, along with the proposed Natoma acquisition, extended Snowflake's AI and governance position, but the financial return from those initiatives remained unquantified. The core uncertainty shifted from demand toward durable GAAP-level operating leverage.
The shares gained 68.7% during the quarter, about 53.8 percentage points ahead of the S&P 500. They rose 36.5% on May 28, the first trading day after results and the quarter's largest move. That response was consistent with faster growth and stronger obligations, though it also embedded high expectations for AI consumption and future margin conversion.

Long-term company research
Updated 2026-08-03
Snowflake operates a cloud-native data platform on Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform. The platform separates storage from compute, centralizes governed access to structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data, and supports analytics, application development, data sharing, data engineering, cybersecurity, and artificial-intelligence workloads. Snowflake does not own the underlying public clouds. It buys their infrastructure and sells customers an abstraction layer: one managed system across workloads, regions, and cloud vendors.
The economic unit is consumption. Customers generally purchase capacity commitments, but product revenue is recognized as they consume compute, storage, data-transfer, and related services. Revenue therefore follows workload execution rather than seat count or straight-line subscription time. Professional services and other revenue—implementation, migration, training, and related work—was only 5% of fiscal 2026 revenue and is designed primarily to accelerate platform adoption, not to be a profit center.
Fiscal 2026 revenue was $4.684 billion, of which $4.472 billion was product revenue. Revenue rose 29% in both fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026, yet GAAP net losses were $838 million, $1.289 billion, and $1.329 billion in fiscal 2024–2026. Snowflake is thus a high-growth, high-gross-margin platform that has not yet demonstrated GAAP operating profitability. Its investment case rests on future operating leverage, not on present accounting earnings.
Snowflake serves organizations of all sizes, but its direct sales effort emphasizes large enterprises whose data is fragmented across legacy systems, applications, and public clouds. At January 31, 2026 it reported 13,328 customers, including 790 members of the Forbes Global 2000; those large organizations produced about 43% of fiscal 2026 revenue. No single end customer was disclosed as material. The count of customers generating more than $1 million of trailing-twelve-month product revenue rose from 184 in fiscal 2022 to 733 in fiscal 2026.
Customers buy faster deployment, elastic capacity, fewer database-administration tasks, consistent governance, and the ability to let many workloads use shared data without making copies. The purchaser may be a technology executive, data team, application developer, security function, or business unit. The user benefits from performance and ease of use, while the economic buyer cares about total workload cost, reliability, regulatory control, and time to insight.
Consumption pricing aligns the initial purchase with realized use but gives customers continuing bargaining power. They can optimize queries, shorten retention, move workloads, or reduce activity immediately. Snowflake disclosed that budget scrutiny led customers to shorten contracts and optimize consumption. Net revenue retention fell from 178% in fiscal 2022 to 158%, 131%, 126%, and 125% in the next four year-ends. Expansion remains strong, but the decline shows that extraordinary early cohort growth was not a permanent baseline.
Snowflake creates gross profit when the price of consumed platform services exceeds third-party cloud infrastructure, GPU and inference costs, support labor, software amortization, and other delivery costs. Fiscal 2026 product revenue carried the core economics; professional services is priced around anticipated delivery cost and can dilute consolidated margin. Public-cloud vendors therefore capture an unavoidable share of every incremental workload, while employees capture a large share of gross profit through cash and equity compensation.
The attractive mechanism is reuse of one software control plane across a growing consumption base. Product revenue increased without a proportional increase in cost of revenue: fiscal 2026 revenue was $4.684 billion, cost of revenue $1.538 billion, and gross profit $3.146 billion, a 67% gross margin. Profit must then survive heavy customer acquisition and product development. Sales and marketing was $2.062 billion and research and development $1.969 billion, producing a $1.435 billion operating loss.
Stock-based compensation is economically central, not a presentation detail. It was $1.600 billion in fiscal 2026—34% of revenue—and $3.1 billion of unrecognized award cost remained. Repurchases can offset dilution, but they consume cash and do not transform employee compensation into a free resource. The causal path to durable profit is therefore: retain workloads, expand consumption, preserve the spread over cloud suppliers, and grow operating expenses materially slower than gross profit. Revenue growth alone is insufficient.
Competition is broad because Snowflake sits between customers and the infrastructure vendors that also sell competing data services. AWS, Azure, and GCP are simultaneously suppliers, distribution channels, and rivals. Legacy database and big-data vendors defend installed estates; cloud-native private and public companies compete in data warehousing, lakehouse, observability, application development, and AI. Open table formats and interoperable tools lower data lock-in, while customers can build directly on public-cloud services. The substitute is not only another platform: it includes internal engineering, open-source software, and retaining legacy systems.
Large customers can negotiate commitments and optimize usage; cloud suppliers possess scale, infrastructure ownership, and product bundling power. System integrators and migration partners influence selection and absorb implementation economics. Snowflake’s response is multi-cloud consistency, workload breadth, price-performance optimization, governance, and secure data sharing. These are useful attributes, but the filings do not establish that rivals cannot reproduce them.
Software capacity can be added quickly, so the capital cycle appears in engineering and price competition rather than physical oversupply. AI has increased demand for data infrastructure, but it also raises GPU/inference costs and attracts hyperscaler investment. Fast technical change can make current architecture less differentiated before customer workloads mature. Conversely, moving governed production data and dependent applications can be costly and risky, slowing customer switching. The industry can therefore combine low entry barriers for a new feature with high barriers to replacing an embedded enterprise platform.
The strongest evidence of advantage is behavioral. Customers expanded consumption above attrition, the number of million-dollar customers quadrupled from fiscal 2022 to fiscal 2026, and remaining performance obligations reached $9.8 billion. A shared data layer can deepen with each workload, policy, integration, and collaborating counterparty. Migration costs arise from rewritten pipelines, retrained staff, governance changes, application dependencies, and operational risk. Cross-cloud consistency can also matter to enterprises that do not want one infrastructure provider to determine their data architecture.
These advantages are conditional. RPO is contracted future revenue, not guaranteed margin, and consumption timing can differ from commitments. Net revenue retention’s decline to 125% is contrary evidence against extrapolating former expansion rates. Open formats improve interoperability and may reduce switching costs. Hyperscalers can bundle competing services with infrastructure, and alternative platforms may match Snowflake on particular workloads.
The defensible claim is narrower than “network effect.” More data products and counterparties can make Snowflake more useful, but most customer data remains private and does not automatically benefit every other customer. The durable advantage, if any, is the cumulative integration of workloads plus a trusted operating record. It would be weakened by persistent price-performance inferiority, security failures, easier workload portability, or customer preference for vertically integrated cloud stacks.
Snowflake’s operating system couples rapid product development with a direct enterprise sales force, resellers, distributors, and implementation partners. The company employed 9,060 people in 36 countries at fiscal 2026 year-end, including 2,424 in research and development. Sales personnel are segmented by industry, customer size, and geography; some commissions depend on actual consumption, partially aligning acquisition activity with realized revenue.
The architecture’s separation of storage and compute permits multiple workloads to scale independently. Centralized software can spread engineering improvements across customers, while use of three public clouds broadens distribution and reduces dependence on any single customer-facing environment. It does not remove supplier dependence: outages, price changes, capacity constraints, regional limitations, or strategic conflict at the cloud providers can affect service quality and margin.
Operational execution should be judged through platform availability, consumption growth, product gross margin, security incidents, customer concentration, and the conversion of RPO into revenue. Management’s acquisitions of Crunchy Data for $164.5 million in cash and, just after year-end, Observe for preliminary consideration of about $596 million widen capabilities but add integration and valuation risk. A broad platform can raise wallet share; uncontrolled product sprawl can instead raise support and development costs faster than customer value.
At January 31, 2026, cash, cash equivalents, and short- and long-term investments totaled $4.8 billion. Operating cash receipts and a large contracted backlog provide liquidity, and the asset-light model requires little owned production infrastructure. This gives Snowflake time to pursue operating leverage despite continuing GAAP losses.
Resilience is weaker than the cash balance alone suggests. Convertible notes create future repayment or dilution exposure; cloud-purchase commitments, leases, compensation, and acquisitions compete for liquidity. Consumption can slow before contracted capacity is recognized, and customers’ optimization behavior makes revenue less fixed than a conventional subscription label implies. Fiscal 2026 operating loss remained $1.435 billion even though revenue grew 29%.
Cash flow should be interpreted after equity compensation. Share-based awards add back to operating cash flow but transfer value to employees. A resilient outcome requires internally generated cash after cloud infrastructure, cash payroll, capitalized development, acquisitions needed to remain competitive, and dilution control. The balance sheet currently absorbs shocks; it does not prove mature self-funding economics.
Snowflake used $873.5 million for common-stock repurchases in fiscal 2026 and approximately $1.9 billion in fiscal 2025. It also paid $672.9 million and $489.1 million, respectively, for taxes on net-settled equity awards. Fiscal 2025 financing included about $2.27 billion of net convertible-note proceeds and $195.5 million for capped calls. Capital allocation therefore combines repurchases, dilution management, debt issuance, acquisitions, and substantial internal development.
Repurchases benefit continuing shareholders only if completed below intrinsic value and if they reduce shares beyond employee issuance. With fiscal 2026 stock compensation of $1.600 billion, buybacks must first be assessed as an offset to compensation dilution. Acquisitions may accelerate the platform roadmap but can duplicate internal research or impair if integration fails. The company pays no dividend and remains loss-making, so shareholder value depends mainly on eventual per-share cash generation.
Governance improved modestly when the dual-class structure was eliminated in July 2025 without changing outstanding shares. The relevant allocation test is whether gross profit retained for sales, research, and acquisitions produces durable incremental cash flow per diluted share. Growth purchased with rising compensation or repeated acquisition spending can enlarge the platform while leaving outside owners’ economics unchanged.
Snowflake handles sensitive enterprise data across jurisdictions, exposing it to privacy, cybersecurity, breach-notification, data-localization, export-control, sanctions, intellectual-property, and sector-specific rules. A breach or material outage could create remediation expense and customer claims while damaging the trust that supports switching costs. Reliance on third-party clouds expands the operational perimeter beyond assets Snowflake controls.
AI products add uncertainty over training data, generated output, bias, intellectual-property ownership, safety, and evolving regulation. Cross-border operations create tax and currency exposure. Employee and customer claims, patent disputes, and acquired-company liabilities can also produce costs not visible in usage metrics. The filings do not permit a clean forecast of loss amounts; the proper conclusion is that legal risk is structurally tied to the platform’s role as custodian and processor of important data.
Snowflake has built a scaled consumption platform with strong gross margins, expanding large-customer adoption, and a substantial contracted backlog. It creates value by reducing the technical and organizational cost of using governed data across workloads and clouds. It will create durable shareholder profit only if that customer value continues to exceed cloud-supplier costs and if gross profit grows faster than sales, research, and equity compensation.
The evidence is mixed. Revenue compounded rapidly and operating-loss margins improved from 40% in fiscal 2025 to 31% in fiscal 2026, yet dollar operating losses and stock compensation remain very large. Net revenue retention’s fall from 178% to 125% shows that consumption expansion can normalize even while the customer base grows. Cash provides resilience, but repurchases alongside heavy equity issuance complicate per-share outcomes.
The thesis would be invalidated by sustained net revenue retention near or below 100%, falling product gross margin, inability to reduce GAAP operating losses as a share of revenue, dilution that absorbs operating cash creation, material security failures, or hyperscaler/open-format alternatives that make workload migration routine. Evidence that would strengthen it includes stable expansion after optimization cycles, durable gross margin despite AI infrastructure costs, declining stock compensation per dollar of gross profit, and positive cash generation after a realistic charge for dilution. The filings establish a valuable platform; they do not yet establish mature profit economics.
Business quality does not by itself establish investment attractiveness; valuation depends on the price paid and the expectations embedded in it.
