Investor background
Brad Gerstner
“Complexity is the enemy of returns.”Brad Gerstner
Brad Gerstner is the founder and CEO of Altimeter Capital, a technology-focused investment firm established in 2008. His background spans law, entrepreneurship, venture capital and public equity investing, including experience building and investing in technology companies before founding Altimeter.
This operating experience shapes his investment approach. He evaluates companies not only through financial metrics but also through product-market fit, unit economics, scalability, organisational design and founder execution.
Altimeter invests across both private and public markets, allowing it to follow companies from early-stage development through IPO and into public ownership. This structure provides deep insight into business fundamentals before they are fully reflected in public disclosures.
Gerstner focuses on large, scalable technology platforms with strong adoption, improving economics and long-term dominance potential. His investments have included major companies such as Snowflake, Meta, Uber and Airbnb, reflecting a concentrated, thematic approach.
He is also active in shareholder engagement. In his 2022 letter to Meta, he criticised excessive complexity and headcount, and called for stronger cost discipline and more focused capital allocation.
Gerstner is notable for combining technological insight with operational understanding of how companies scale and execute. However, Altimeter’s performance is harder to evaluate fully due to its mix of public and private investments.
